Even the most seasoned triathlete will falter in an obstacle course as brutal as the Spartan Race without ample preparation.

Across rugged terrain stretching three to over 13 miles, the Spartan Race sends contenders plowing through a series of 20 to 30 grueling challenges including mud, fire, and barbed wire to push mind and body past the limit. For every hardened Spartan, the race is no mere event; it is a way of life.

“Spartan Race is 50 percent physical and 50 percent mental—physical training is going to get you there, but it’s designed to test you mentally,” shared Michael Reyes, Director of Spartan Race Philippines. “So keep an open mind, push yourself hard and know that we are not creating something impossible. We’re doing something that anyone can do. It will be hard but know that you can do it,” he added.

Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge S2 (1)

Discipline on top of determination will be essential to reach the finish line in one piece. With the first-ever Reebok Spartan Race in the Philippines happening this September 16 at the Timberland grounds in San Mateo, Rizal, here are a few expert tips for Filipino Spartan hopefuls who want to conquer one of the most formidable obstacle courses on the planet.

Be ready for anything

Personal trainer Kristin Rooke of BuiltLean warns Spartan Race newbies to get ready for anything since race coordinators don’t release the course map until the event itself. With every race a surprise, would-be participants must build endurance, speed, as well as upper and lower body strength so they can prepare for any obstacle.

Fitness First Philippines, the official fitness partner of Spartan Race Philippines, offers a 45-minute Spartan SGX program to help Filipino hopefuls overcome the race. Headed by elite SGX coaches, each session trains participants in a range of movements—from sprints and squats to lifts and lunges—to prepare against any imaginable hurdle while improving physical performance.

Burpees, burpees, burpees

Surviving each obstacle is one thing; surviving the penalties for failure is another. Obstacle racing documentary Rise of the Sufferfests director Scott Keneally recounts the pain of having to do 30 burpees for every failed challenge, which made him quit the race midway.

Rooke reiterates the importance of the burpee and urges Spartan Race contenders to include this much-maligned workout in training routines, in case they fail or skip an obstacle.

Eating right

Proper diet is fundamental to overcoming the Spartan Race. Eating like a Spartan is an entire philosophy that prescribes pH-balanced, primarily plant-based meals with whole ingredients that consider seasonality, availability, sustainability, and affordability, along with nutrient density, taste, and impact on the environment.

To succeed in an obstacle race where upper-body strength is crucial, Torey Armul of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics also recommends plenty of carbohydrates that can fuel large muscle groups. Similarly, dietician Natalie Rizzo suggests extra protein during strength training, as well as chicken or chocolate milk after workouts to beef up the upper body.

Inspiration for Filipino Spartans

Rigorous training and proper diet are only part of the equation to a successful Spartan Race. For the resolve to take on and complete the arduous run, inspiration is critical.

American sports competition series Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge delivers motivation with Spartan Race-inspired obstacles that only the strongest, fastest, and most united teams can surpass for the grand prize of $250,000. Catch the premiere of Season 2 on September 2, Saturday at 9:35PM, first and exclusive on RTL CBS Extreme.

RTL CBS Extreme is available on SKYcable HD channel 209, Destiny Cable Digital channel 104, and Cablelink HD channel 310.

Herbalife Athlete and Women’s Triathlon Team Captain Laarni Paredes finishes Norseman Triathlon in Norway last August 5, setting history as the first Filipina to conquer the “toughest” triathlon race. Last year, her husband Oscar Paredes, also finished the race as the first Filipino finisher.

“I learned about Norseman a few years ago from a friend who said it is one of his bucketlist races and one of the toughest in the world. Having done 7 full iron distance races in the past and feeling quite confident about finishing such events, I wanted something new, a bigger challenge just to see if I can make it. My husband, of course, is a huge influence on my decision to push through after I got a slot in the lottery. It means a lot to have his support because it means a lot having his blessing to train for the event, or allot budget for the trip” said Laarni.

The race started with a 3.8 km swim in the ice cold river of Eidjford followed by a 180 km bike across five mountains. The last leg is a 42km hill top run.

Paredes claims the bike part as the hardest where she spent about 9 hours cycling in the hilly mountains of Norway. She said there were times when she wanted to quit but thinking about the people who supported her kept her going.

“It’s cliche, but it worked like a charm – just enjoy the journey. It helped to focus more on enjoying every moment of it, treat it as a journey, rather than a race” she said.

As a Herbalife Athlete, Paredes’ training and nutrition must be always on point.

“I have been an Herbalife-sponsored triathlete for eight years now. And really, being with the company, taking the nutrition it provides, helped in creating the result that I wanted”

“Prior to the event, there’s the usual morning meal in the form of H24 F1 sport, H24 Rebuild Strength after workouts for recovery. I also take 1 or 2 servings of H24 F1 Sport before a workout for fuel. NRG is also a staple during training and racing for that energy boost. H24 Prolong is also my favorite during races because it helps fuel me as a dual source of carbs and electrolytes”

After finishing the “toughest triathlon” Laarni is now set for a long off season and to spend more time with her family. She will be back to racing locally next year and if all the stars aligned, another extreme international race.

Under Armour Philippines supported ONE Championship’s year-end fight card as two beloved mixed martial arts athletes competed at the highly-anticipated “Age of Domination” event on Friday, December 2.

To the delight of Under Armour fans, Brandon Vera and Mark Striegl came out of the 20,000-seater SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City with their hands raised in triumph as both Filipino-American fighters scored impressive victories in their respective bouts.

Vera successfully defended his ONE Heavyweight World Championship , making easy work of previously unbeaten Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine to win by technical knockout just minutes into the first round.

From the opening bell, Vera began to land a series of solid blows on Sekine, who surprisingly took Vera’s best shots quite well.

Moments later, a thudding body kick connected for Vera, sending Sekine crashing to the canvas clutching his midsection. Vera then put on the finishing touches with punishing strikes from the top to get the win.

On the other hand, Striegl persevered through three grueling rounds against Bulgaria’s Sotir Kichukov to win by unanimous decision in a catchweight contest.

Striegl began the match aggressively, using superior speed and angles to stifle Kichukov who appeared unable to time Striegl’s erratic rhythm. Striegl took Kichukov down to the ground at will, controlling his opponent with a smothering top game.

In the end, all three judges saw the bout the same way with Striegl emerging as the victor.

Vera was the honorary guest in the opening of the Bonifacio High Street brand house in the same year, while Striegl has been an Under Armour gear user since he started his professional mixed martial arts career and was enlisted as a brand ambassador since 2015

The most innovative sports apparel in the world today is the official brand partner of ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION.
