After two months of being friends with the treadmill, I finally got back into the road by joining the 7Eleven Run1000 last Sunday, January 19 at Aseana City, Macapagal Blvd, Pasay City. Part of the race route for 10k, 16k & 21K was the Cavite Expressway (Cavitex). By the way, Run 1000 is in celebration for the opening of the 1000th store of 7Eleven in the Philippines. Congrats guys!

It was my first run for the year and decided to join the 5k distance. The 5k category was jampacked! I think almost five thousand runners joined the 5k distance alone. It was crazy but I think everyone managed to run and finish the race of their chosen distances.

I think most of the participants of the 5k category where newbies into running. During the run, I saw a lot of “don’ts” on a fun run so I decided to come up with a list of do’s and don’t’s for newbies into fun runs. Here they are:

Fun Run Tips for Newbie Runners

1. Check out & review the events map. This will give you the idea where to park your car, where to deposit your bags, where the portalets are, etc. This will save you a lot of time during and after the race.

2. Keep right. Always run on the right side of the road to give way for faster runners who are on their way back already. Also, walk/jog on sidewalks to avoid blocking the other runners. During the race, most of the 5k runners chose to walk in groups making it hard for other runners to navigate the course.

3. Throw your cups on trash bins. 7Eleven Run1000 provided trash bins every after hydration stations. We have no excuse for not using it properly.

4. Give a hand sign or slowly change your pace when you are going to stop/walk to avoid collission from the runner at your back.

Thank you Summit Water! 🙂

5. Keep calm & stay away from arguments. During the race I saw a runner who is arguing with a marshall because he was called out for running on the other side of the road. He kept on answering back and said: “Why are you shouting at me?”. Seriously? Do we want to waste our energy for arguing? Always remember these people are just doing their jobs. Just follow the rules and just run.

6. Don’t play the blame game! If you join a big race, expect many walkers from 3k & 5k category and long que of line after the race. If you want to avoid these: run fast, finish early and train harder. Stop blaming other runners or the race org for not achieving your PR.

7. Listen & be responsible to your body. Know your limits! Walk when you have to and always hydrate yourself. Prepare yourself before race day. Sleep well and do warm ups. Medics will be there but you should not rely to them. You are responsible for your own self while on the road.

I finished my 5K race with an unofficial time of 33:33, not bad for a 85kg man like me. Lol. I got a medal, a shirt and a lot of freebies from different sponsors of the event like Coca Cola, Selecta, Pocari Sweat, Dole, Powerade, Bacchus, Summit Water & Trust Condom (not kidding).

It was great race experience! The weather was nice and the hydration were overflowing during and after the race. I will kill myself if anyone will raise issues regarding hydration! Lol

7Eleven Run1000 is definitely in the running as one of the best races of 2014. Special thanks to Summit Water and Congrats to 7Eleven Team for a very successful event!

Last 11-12 January 2014, the team behind up-and-coming travel website tripmoba.com tied up their laces and geared up for the 1st Corregidor Marathon and 4th International Half Marathon, the annual race set at the heart of the historic Corregidor Island.
tripmoba.com, the first Philippine-focused online travel website, co-sponsored the event and four runners, and gathered an impressive number of ticket registrations via their website, which also offers a wide range of flights, hotels and experience packages that can be booked online instantly. The dynamic website also allows travellers and tourists to provide their own reviews and recommendations for public viewing.

“We are honored to have been part of the 1st Corregidor Marathon and 4th International Half Marathon,” says tripmoba.com President Zaki Delgado. “We at tripmoba.com are keen on making great travel stories, and the experience we had at Corregidor was very memorable. The team got to meet different people, join the run and of course, enjoy being in such a historic place like Corregidor.”

At the close of the marathon on Sunday, tripmoba.com treated the winners of the 21K run to another surprise – Erinio Raquin of the male category and Luisa Raterta of the female category were given a special helicopter ride back to Manila – no doubt, an exciting and rewarding end to the weekend.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s marathon,” Mr. Delgado adds. “It’s a wonderful event, and we at tripmoba.com are always looking for ways to make great stories happen.”

Elite triathletes and celebrities Isabelle Daza, Sandra Gonzales & Niko Huelgas took “The Fitness & Athletics Indoor Duathlon Challenge” that night at Fitness and Athletics Store, Bonifacio Global City.  I was so amazed and impressed by their performance. Ang huhusay! 🙂

I asked myself if i can also do that, given that i have not tried a duathlon before. I am confident on the run part but the 20k bike, hmmm, that will be the challenge. We love challenges right? Haha. Also, this is a chance for  runners who want to try duathlon but do not have their own bike yet, just like me. Both of us are first timers, so no pressure. Haha. I’m sure its going to be fun and exciting! So what are you waiting for? Register now and take the The Fitness & Athletics Indoor Duathlon Challenge! See you there! 🙂

Last March 17, Unilab’s Run United continued to draw thousands of runners as the first leg of the prestigious Runrio Trilogy 2013 commenced at SM Mall of Asia Complex. Run United really has this something that keeps all these runners running back again and again and again.

As for myself, this is my 10th Run United Race (Whaaat?!?), the very first was way back in 2010, when I joined the Leg 3 of Runrio Trilogy: Run United 2 (10K). By 2011, I joined 4 Unilab races: Run United 1 (10K), Run United 2 (10K), Run United 3 (32K) & Run United Cebu (10K). I promised myself to become part of the “Trilogy Awards Night” the next year so last year, 2012, I joined 4 races again: Run United 1 (21K), Run United 2 (21K), Run United 3 (32K) and RUPM (42K). That gave me a ticket to the much awaited Runrio Trilogy Awards night which will happen on April 6, at SMX.

I ran the 21K distance again and I’m hoping to complete this year’s trilogy (21-32-42). The race started earlier that the usual gun start. At 4am, the 21K runners were already off to conquer the roads of Pasay, Manila and Makati.

I decided to run alone this leg, no pacer, no running buddy only because I know I’ll be doing a lot of walks because of lack of training. My last run before this race was actually Condura Skyway HM which happened last February 3.

Run-United-1-2013-Bishop-Gabiola-101

On my way to the starting line, I met my Pex team mate & Ayala Triad Eugene. We ran the first 4 kilometers of the race. I had my first walk when we reach the narrow street of Leveriza Buendia.

There were so many runners that day, but surprisingly, there were very few familiar faces. I don’t know what happened but old runner friends were missing in action that morning.

I reached Mayapis St. and I saw HOB team mate Kit Atienza & Deemen Runner Noel already on their way back. Sila na mabibilis! Haha

It was a continuous run-walk for me. I reached 10K mark at 1:10 which made me felt that I’m just doing it right.

The race route was a little different this time, after the Makati route, you’ll go back to Macapagal Blvd up to Coastal Mall before you go back to MOA. Luneta & CCP were not part of the route this time, no flyovers.

I continued my run walk strategy. After 12K, I started seeing familiar faces. Kamote Runner, Jet Paiso & Bobby Cruise were there running the 21K category too.

At 16K, I saw Teacher Cheryl and we ran together for a while. We checked the time and its 2 hours already. We jokingly said that we still have 1 hour for the last 5K. Haha. Both of us were targeting just a sub3 for this race.

On the last 3K, I saw my officemate s Andrea, Homer & Jenny rushing their way to the finish line. They were also taking photos. Haha

All categories merged at the last kilometers of the race so it was hard to look for friends anymore. Haha. I lost teacher Cheryl and I ran alone up to the finish line.

I finish the race at 2:48, unofficial time. I got my medal, finisher shirt and my loot bag which contains a towel (yehey!), sun visor, small can of century tuna and some sample products from Unilab. I met with my Pex Running Team after the race for breakfast. 🙂

Unilab Run United delivered a great race and I think that’s the reason why runners continually support this race every leg and every year. When I run this race, I don’t worry about hydration or medical assistance. I just feel safe and comfortable in all Run United race. They already made a mark and a brand of quality races in the Philippine running community.

Congratulations to all the finishers and see you all in Run United 2! 🙂
