2013 is the year of running for adidas.

Last February, adidas launched Energy Boost, a groundbreaking innovation in running footwear technology featuring superior cushioning that allows runners to store and unleash energy more efficiently with every stride.

To continue their efforts for all things running, adidas is back with its annual King of The Road (KOTR), one of the most anticipated races across Southeast Asia. This year, adidas is pushing the limits for KOTR to be even bigger than before as it opens a new category exclusively for students 25 years old and under.

The 10K Relay for Students is set specifically to encourage the youth to get into a healthy, active lifestyle and to give them a chance to represent their alma mater. Students need to team up in pairs – one male and one female – with each running 5K to complete the total 10K distance. Winners don’t just get individual cash prizes; they will also win prizes for their schools.

“adidas has always been an advocate of health and wellness through sports. The King of the Road is a testament to that fact,” said Jason Gervasio, Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager of adidas Philippines.

“The new School Championship category aims not only to promote fitness, but also to inspire teamwork and pride as students are given the chance to be ambassadors of their respective campuses.”

The adidas KOTR 2013 will be held on July 7, 2013 at Bonifacio Global City. Apart from the School Championship category, the race will include distances of 10K for the general public and 16.8K with Open and Closed categories. The Closed category is strictly for Filipinos while the Open category is for all nationalities.

The top male and female winners from the 16.8K Closed category will be hailed as the Philippines’ King and Queen of the Road and will represent the Philippines in the KOTR Southeast Asia Championship in Malaysia.

ALASKA TIES UP WITH FCBESCOLA FOOTBALL CAMP, SPONSORS FUTKALERO CHILDREN FROM TONDO

What is better than playing against one of the best football clubs in the world? Being trained by them.

Never in a million years did they thought that they will be able to see the world’s #1 ranked football club, FCBarcelona, in action, much less interact with them. But these promising young football talents from Tondo did just that and more. Thanks to the sponsorship of Alaska Milk Corporation, the five Futkaleros— Champ Cyrus Wico, Jonas Lorens Lavarias, John David Espiritu, Maria Rochel Mendaňo, and Roger Batiugas— were able to train under the FCBarcelona coaches Jordi Blanco and Jose Moratalla during the FCBEscola Philippines Barcelona Soccer Camp for the youth, a sports workshop that did not only aim to teach Filipino kids the rudiments and techniques in the game but also share with them the FCBarcelona values of teamwork and hard work.

“Alaska has been there from the very start, even at that time when football was not very popular. It has been supporting the grassroots development of the sport and in training players. The annual Alaska Cup, is in fact, the biggest cup in the country, with thousands of players in a single day. So we were not surprised that Alaska lent their support to this project,” says Michael Reyes, organizer of the camp and Team Socceroo’s captain.

Training under World’s Best

Excitement lit up the eyes of the five Futkaleros as they showed their moves to the coaches. They believe that the camp is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve their game, learn some new skills and incorporate a new strategy into their play. According to Reyes, the style of the Futkaleros is more freestyle. “I have seen them play and their commitment to the game is impressive. I know that they practice every day. They’re fast. They’re agile. Participating in the camp will help them develop their play more.”

What kids will take away from the five-day camp is not just technique but the values: that football is not about winning but in playing your best and playing with your team. Steven Chua, Operations Director for FCBEscola Asia Pacific, relates, “I remembered a FCBarcelona camp in Singapore that we organized. After the camp, I asked one of the kids what he learned. He told me he learned the reasons why he has to move here, why he has to make a pass. Before, he just does it because he has to without even knowing why. He also learned that football is not about winning but playing the game.”

More than a hundred kids, 6 to 14 years old, signed up for the camp held recently at the Alabang Country Club. They did not even mind the extra-ordinarily hot day, showing off their skills on the field, all of them eager to train under the very best in the world. World famous players Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi were all products of FCBEscola

Alaska Milk Corporation brings FCBEscola, the world’s No. 1 ranked football club here in the Philippines to help develop children through sports programs such as the FCBEscola Barcelona Camp. The FCBEscola Barcelona Camp has already begun training kids last April 17 and will continue until April 21 at the Ayala Alabang Country Club.

The FCBEscola Barcelona Camp has already begun training kids last April 17 and will continue until April 21 at the Ayala Alabang Country Club.

Built not as important as technique

According to the organizers, the Futkaleros have the typical Filipino built, which unlike basketball, is suited to football. Filipinos are not as tall as other kids but they compensate with their incredible speed and agility. FCBarcerlona has members who have similar built but are still able to excel. In football, built is not as important as technique.

“The style of football of FCBarcelona is the ‘most fit’ and ‘most matched’ [style] with Filipinos. They do not rely on size. In other sports, if you are big, you’d be a better player. In football, we rely more on technique, the passing, how the team plays. FCBarcelona’s style of football is not very individualistic. It emphasizes team play,” says Nicholas Reyes, FCBEscola camp organizer.

Wanted: Healthy body, good attitude and passion

There is also no age requirement, just a healthy body, good attitude and passion for the sport. Reyes emphasized good nutrition at an early age “as this will give children an edge in the sport.” Both exercise and proper diet are essential, especially to the significant number of Filipino kids, who have been found to suffer from undernutrition and overweight problems (National Nutrition Survey of FNRI-DOST, 2008). It is recommended that they eat a balanced set of meals and do more physical activity, which Alaska Milk Corporation has been advocating through their sports programs.

All In for the Biggest Race Across Southeast Asia

adidas Philippines Opens Registration for the Annual adidas King of the Road 2013

Main Creative - KOTR 2013

Runners, it’s time for you to gear up because adidas is now opening the registration for this year’s adidas King of the Road (KOTR), happening this July 7 at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

The 2013 edition of the adidas KOTR will allow runners to choose between the 16.8K and 10k race categories. The 16.8K-distance will have two sub-categories—Closed, which will be exclusive for Filipinos, and Open category for all nationalities. Male and female runners who will top the race from the Closed category will be crowned as the Philippines’ King and Queen of the Road and will represent the country in the adidas KOTR Southeast Asia Championship in Malaysia later this year.

Participants last year were competing for the title of King and Queen of the road, and a chance to represent the country at the SEA leg in Singapore.

Participants last year were competing for the title of King and Queen of the road, and a chance to represent the country at the SEA leg in Singapore.

On the other hand, the 10K-distance will have an added feature this year, the Student’s Relay category. The Students’ Relay category, created to encourage the youth to lead a healthy lifestyle, will be open exclusively to college and university students 25 years old and below. One male and one female student need to partner up and form a relay team, with each running a 5km leg. The winning pair will win cash prizes individually as well as for their respective schools.

The regular 10K race will still be held, which is open to all runners interested to join this distance. Prizes also await runners who will top the said categories.

“The brand’s battle cry is All In, as adidas continues to support and encourage people to be the best they can be in whatever interests they have —be it sports, fashion, or music ” says Jason Gervasio, adidas Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager. “In the case of KOTR, adidas is showcasing its commitment to sports by bringing together and empowering runners from all over the Philippines and Southeast Asia, giving them a chance to engage in their passion for running.”

Southeast Asia Roads Lead to Malaysia

adidas is not only encouraging runners to compete within their countries. As part of its drive to provide the best experiences for its consumers, KOTR will once again be held in different legs across the SEA countries.

To date, the first adidas KOTR SEA Regional Championship held in October 2011 culminated in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, involving participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The success of this multi-country race inspired the brand to make the event a regional annual tradition. Hence, the KOTR SEA Championship Year 2 was organized and held at the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore in 2012.

This year, participants of the KOTR SEA Championship will get a chance to run through the streets of Malaysia. The final race will be held in October, where winners from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand will be joined by the KOTR SEA Championship Closed Category participants from the host country itself. Only one winner each from the Male and Female divisions will be crowned as the adidas Southeast Asia King and Queen of the Road.

In anticipation of one of the Philippines’ biggest annual running events, National Geographic Channel is cooperating with local law enforcement and local government to beef up security for Earth Day Run 2013 on April 28, 2013 at Bonifacio Global City. The channel has broken Earth Day Run’s previous record of 10,000 participants and is working hard to ensure the safety of the 12,000 runners registered this year.

In order to assure participants a safe and pleasurable running experience, National Geographic Channel is taking the necessary steps to address safety concerns and secure the race route. Hundreds of members of the police force and K9 units will be deployed at the venue, and National Geographic Channel is employing dozens of additional race marshalls along with increasing its medical staff and ambulances on call. They are also putting up more barricades and more water stations to protect the runners and help them stay in top condition during the course of the race.

“Let’s not put our guards down. Let’s be vigilant in protecting our runners. We must let all our runners cross the finish line safely,” said Police Chief Superintendent and District Director Gen. Jose Erwin T. Villacorte from the Southern Police District.

The Nat Geo Earth Day Run is consistently one of the biggest running events in the Philippines, beginning in 2010 with 6,000 runners and gaining the participation of 10,000 runners in each of the last two years. This year, 10,000 more runners, young and old, are expected to participate in the Earth Day Run to show their support for the rehabilitation of the environment and a greener future.

Now on its fourth year, Earth Day Run is giving participants the chance to green the planet by promising to plant three trees in each registered runner’s name.

First of all, I would like to thank Salomon Pilipinas and Primer Group of Companies esp. to the always beautiful & sexy, Ms. Laira Legaspi, for giving me the opportunity to take part in the most technical trail run of the country, the Salomon X Trail Run 2013, held last March 23, at Hamilo Coast, Nasugbu, Batangas.

Salomon X Trail Run offered three distances, 24K, 12K & 6K. Being an adventurous and a challenge seeker that I am, I chose to join the 6K category. Haha. Don’t get me wrong, the 6K category was already a challenge for me. I don’t usually climb mountains so I know it’ll be extra difficult for a simple road runner like me. I can do 12K & 24K on the road anytime but not anywhere. This was a mountain run! As some would always say, “Respect the distance”, but since I’m not a fan of that phrase, let me just say “Respect the mountain”. Haha.

salomon1

And so I joined the 6K road + trail category together with my friends from Pex Running Club: Cat, Kc, Thirdy, Yuri, Lee & Rodel. Kay joined the 12K category and Bata Batuta, ran the 24K mountain run (*claps*). Mj & Gf were also there to support.

Since I was part of the group who did the test run, weeks before the event, I already know what to expect on the route. I know it will be hilly, rocky and deadly. Lol. I could say that I was mentally prepared and physically… fat. Lol.

All of us started the race together but immediately lost each other at the hilly roads of Hamilo Coast. Rodel took an early lead while KC & I paced until we reached the trails. Thirdy and Lee were just right behind us and Cat & Yuri were trailing while enjoying the view and taking lots of pictures.

Kc & I, ran-walked the uphills and ran the whole downhills of the road. I told him that it will be better to enter the trail in the front of the pack because everyone will almost walk once they reach the trail. True enough, there was a long queue of runners trying to climb that first part of the trail. The trail was too narrow for two runners to go up side by side. It was a single of line or runners and no one could overtake.

salomon2

Trail runners in action! lol

The trail leading to the cliff was one hell of a route. It felt like forever going down and up of that part of the route. I literally had to stop to catch my breath. We found Rodel resting on the u turn. We took some pictures and from there we ran together until almost the finish line.

On our way up to that freaking trail, we saw Lee & Thirdy catching up on us. Still no sighting of Cath & Yuri, during that time.

The three of us, continued to conquer (naks!)  the last part of trails and reached the finish line with the time of 1:20++  minutes. It was the most difficult trail run I had so far. Now I know the meaning of “the most technical race”. Haha.

After the race, participants were given cold Gatorade and free breakfast. Runners can choose from chicken, pork or fish meal.  There were also loot bags for all finishers of the race.

salomon3

Post race: Congrats Bata Batuta & Kay Yabut! 🙂

We rested under a tree while waiting for Bata Batuta who ran the 24K category. After so many hours (lol). We saw Bata crossing the finish line and he made it to the cut off! We were so proud of him. Also, Kay placed 4th on the 12K – female. Good job Pex Runners!

Salomon X trail run proved on this race that they are really the most technical trail run. They also taught me that trail run is not for the weak, You really have to prepare and train hard for it. I am truly proud to all the finishers of the race especially the 24 category. Hats off to all of you.

Congratulations guys and hope to see you again next year!!!

 Photos c/o Cat, Mj & Thirdy. 🙂

Last March 17, Unilab’s Run United continued to draw thousands of runners as the first leg of the prestigious Runrio Trilogy 2013 commenced at SM Mall of Asia Complex. Run United really has this something that keeps all these runners running back again and again and again.

As for myself, this is my 10th Run United Race (Whaaat?!?), the very first was way back in 2010, when I joined the Leg 3 of Runrio Trilogy: Run United 2 (10K). By 2011, I joined 4 Unilab races: Run United 1 (10K), Run United 2 (10K), Run United 3 (32K) & Run United Cebu (10K). I promised myself to become part of the “Trilogy Awards Night” the next year so last year, 2012, I joined 4 races again: Run United 1 (21K), Run United 2 (21K), Run United 3 (32K) and RUPM (42K). That gave me a ticket to the much awaited Runrio Trilogy Awards night which will happen on April 6, at SMX.

I ran the 21K distance again and I’m hoping to complete this year’s trilogy (21-32-42). The race started earlier that the usual gun start. At 4am, the 21K runners were already off to conquer the roads of Pasay, Manila and Makati.

I decided to run alone this leg, no pacer, no running buddy only because I know I’ll be doing a lot of walks because of lack of training. My last run before this race was actually Condura Skyway HM which happened last February 3.

Run-United-1-2013-Bishop-Gabiola-101

On my way to the starting line, I met my Pex team mate & Ayala Triad Eugene. We ran the first 4 kilometers of the race. I had my first walk when we reach the narrow street of Leveriza Buendia.

There were so many runners that day, but surprisingly, there were very few familiar faces. I don’t know what happened but old runner friends were missing in action that morning.

I reached Mayapis St. and I saw HOB team mate Kit Atienza & Deemen Runner Noel already on their way back. Sila na mabibilis! Haha

It was a continuous run-walk for me. I reached 10K mark at 1:10 which made me felt that I’m just doing it right.

The race route was a little different this time, after the Makati route, you’ll go back to Macapagal Blvd up to Coastal Mall before you go back to MOA. Luneta & CCP were not part of the route this time, no flyovers.

I continued my run walk strategy. After 12K, I started seeing familiar faces. Kamote Runner, Jet Paiso & Bobby Cruise were there running the 21K category too.

At 16K, I saw Teacher Cheryl and we ran together for a while. We checked the time and its 2 hours already. We jokingly said that we still have 1 hour for the last 5K. Haha. Both of us were targeting just a sub3 for this race.

On the last 3K, I saw my officemate s Andrea, Homer & Jenny rushing their way to the finish line. They were also taking photos. Haha

All categories merged at the last kilometers of the race so it was hard to look for friends anymore. Haha. I lost teacher Cheryl and I ran alone up to the finish line.

I finish the race at 2:48, unofficial time. I got my medal, finisher shirt and my loot bag which contains a towel (yehey!), sun visor, small can of century tuna and some sample products from Unilab. I met with my Pex Running Team after the race for breakfast. 🙂

Unilab Run United delivered a great race and I think that’s the reason why runners continually support this race every leg and every year. When I run this race, I don’t worry about hydration or medical assistance. I just feel safe and comfortable in all Run United race. They already made a mark and a brand of quality races in the Philippine running community.

Congratulations to all the finishers and see you all in Run United 2! 🙂

David Beckham cools the world in climacool® Revolution
adidas presents 360° ventilation running experience
with latest climacool® running shoe

April 2013 – adidas presents the climacool® Revolution running shoe, a 360° ventilation running experience for the coolest run. The latest edition of cool running, which provides ventilation from all sides for improved running performance, can be seen on the feet of sports superstar David Beckham in adidas’ latest TV commercial.

ss1320cc20beckham20action208
New ventilation channels across the outsole and the use of climacool® material on the upper of the shoe help sweat to evaporate. In addition, the COOLEVER lining, a special clover-shaped yarn, keeps the foot cool, dry and comfortable during the run. The achieved performance benefit of 360° ventilation reduces thermal stress and discomfort during workouts and results in increased running performance.

climacool1revolutionM03

  climacool1revolutionM
The benefit of 360° ventilation is highlighted in the new climacool® launch film which shows David Beckham on a run in the summer heat. While the rest of the city is trying to get any bit of breeze with the help of hand-held fans and window-mounted air conditioners, Beckham enjoys a cool and ventilated run in his climacool® Revolution. Directed by Nathan Price and developed by 180LA, the film will launch in both a 15-second and a 30-second version in time for the shoe’s global retail launch.

The new climacool® Revolution running shoe is available as of April 2013 in adidas Sport Performance stores and other sports retailers nationwide with a recommended retail price of PHP 6895.

PRESS RELEASE:

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide according to the World Health Organization. In 2008, it accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths). About 70% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue to rise to over 13.1 million in 2030.

In the Philippines, recent studies from 2008-2010 have shown a steady increase in cancer incidence. It is also predicted that new cases of cancer will amount to roughly 82,468 new cases in both male and female.

Now, more than ever, it is important to spread cancer awareness and information to keep the numbers from rising
even further.

Challenging Realities

Cancer is a devastating disease that gnaws, not only on the patients, but also on their families. It takes its toll on their bodies, emotions, finances, and relationships. While there are available sophisticated medical technology and equipment, cadre of experts in cancer treatment and management, and protocols equal to the patients’ requirement for healing, the cost of therapy is prohibitively high. With the poverty rate at 45% in Q4 of 2011, most Filipinos cannot afford even the “standard-of-care” treatments. Unless we all step into the ugly picture and stand up to cancer, it might continue to cripple more families and claim more lives.

Frontrunners of Hope

Ever at the forefront of the fight against cancer, the country’s premier tertiary cancer center, ST. LUKE’S MEDICAL CENTER, partners with the St. Luke’s Cancer Institute’s CORRIDOR OF HOPE, INC., to help spread cancer awareness and bring hope to cancer patients and their families.

On 20 April 2013, the St. Luke’s Cancer Institute’s Corridor of Hope, in collaboration with ally medical practitioners, corporate partners, cancer support groups, and cancer patients and families, leads the race to life through RUN AGAINST CANCER, a charity run for the benefit of indigent cancer patients.

Cancer patients’ healing journey is often long and arduous. We can help bridge the gap between indigent cancer patients and their needed treatment if we’d altogether unleash the power of our feet. With our help, they just might be 3K, 5K, or 10K away from their recovery. Support the race to life. Run against cancer.

THE OBJECTIVES:

• To raise a minimum of P 20M to help the indigent cancer patients of St. Luke’s Medical Center  and other hospitals
